Kreacher inherited his post from his *mother*. Nowhere is there a
mention of a house-elf's *father*. Maybe the normal fashion of
reproduction for house-elves does not follow the human model. Maybe
it's closer to that of ants or bees.
Also, it might not be the purchase price for a house-elf that's
prohibitive, but the upkeep.
What canon evidence is there besides the absence of father elves?
None. Just flinging random monkey wrenches...
