Strangely, I'd never thought of this as missing a 'never'. Because 
the sentence is followed by an ellipsis due to Fudge being 
interupted, I'd always assumed he would have gone on to say something 
like he'd heard of a curse scar acting as a warning before but he'd 
never put any credence in such myths.

Perhaps this might explain why the sentence has never been changed?
