Carol:
Presumably in Phineas's case, two different portraits were painted at
different times in his life, yet it does seem as if there's only one
Portrait!Phineas, who apparently spends most of his time in
Dumbledore's office, but sometimes lurks invisibly behind the portrait
frame in Harry's room at 12 Grimmauld Place, listening in on Harry's
conversations with himself. Or maybe the two portraits have exactly
the same personality but there really are two selves.

As for photographs, we know that Percy walked out of the family
photograph in his father's office, and I doubt that he went back to
some other photo in the family album. Maybe he joined the photo of
Penny that he had with him in PoA. Wonder if she's recovered yet from
her blotched nose?

I think the portraits (since there are so few of them) must know about
each other, but the photographs probably "live separate independent
lives." That's my assumption at the moment, at any rate.

Carol, still wondering why Phineas didn't return and whether he's
persuaded at last that Sirius is dead
