Except that Harry looks exactly like James, has Lily's eyes and the 
scar on his forehead. I think that would have made it pretty simple 
for everyone to find out, who he really was. Also, the wizarding 
population in Britain is not that big. Most families know each other. 
It's not that easy to just invent a "Harry Smith". Of course, they 
could have claimed that he came from Canada or Australia or wherever, 
but that still doesn't solve the problem that harry resembles his 
father way to much, not to know, that he is a Potter.
