The following is about Neville, Gran and Professor Trelawneys prediction.
Could this be the tie that binds?
Professor Trelawneys first prediction in POA was to Neville asking, Is
your Grandmother well? Neville replied I think so and she said I
wouldnt be so sure if I were you, dear, Maybe what she meant in this case
was, is she in her right mind? I think Trelawneys prediction or premonition
of Is your Grandmother well? more of the key to solving the answer about
Neville and his parents than the gum wrappers or at the very least part of
the answer. Trelawney has predicted quite a few things that have a bit of
merit to them. (1) Nevilles cup breaking (I realize that could have been a
no brainier given Nevilles clumsiness) (2) When Trelawney told Pavarti to
beware of a red haired man and then her twin Padma went to the Yule Ball the
next year with Ron and had a terrible time with him (3) When she told
Lavender that what she was dreading, would happen on Oct. 16th and that was
the day that Lavender received the news of her pet rabbit being killed by a
fox (4) Trelawney thought she saw a grim in Harrys cup of tea leaves and
again in the crystal orb and there had been a black dog that Harry saw
several times, which of course was Sirius, but that black dog could have
been mistaken or misinterpreted for a grim (5) someone will leave us forever
around Easter and Hermione quit the class shortly before Easter break (6)
During Christmas dinner, Trelawney stated that Lupin would not be with us
much longer, and he wasnt, he quit teaching after that year. A lot of
Trelawneys predictions have more or less came true, in some sense of the
word, with the exception of her first one to Neville.
We know that Neville does have magical powers but they did not appear as
early as most children would have exhibited them. So, Uncle Algie attempted
to make sure of his magical power or force it out of him by dropping him out
of a window. We know that Neville is very forgetful; this forgetfulness most
likely is not inbred (as a lot of people here suspect) but a charm of sorts.
If it is true that there has been a charm or spell placed on Neville then
the question would be who performed it and for what reason? I think it was
Gran. I think Gran may be trying to protect Neville and his parents by
keeping them in a state that would make them appear to be less threatening.
What does Gran know? I dont really think she is bad but I feel she is
protecting a truth that only she knows in the only way she knows how.
Neville seems to have been suppressed from exhibiting magic when he was
young, suppressed from remembering and suppressed from feeling that he would
ever be a good wizard by degrading him. Maybe Gran felt that if Neville
never became a wizard he would not be in any future danger. When Uncle Algie
forced the magic out of him by dropping him out of the window Neville said
everyone was so happy and Gran even cried. I dont think those were tears of
joy. I think that Gran had a plan herself and Uncle Algie ruined it. From
here on Gran had to find another way of keeping Neville from looking like a
threat to whoever or whatever Gran is afraid of, so she has placed charms on
him to make him forgetful and possibly clumsy. Gran also seems to degrade
Neville by repeatedly telling him how unlike his father he is. I dont think
Gran wants him to exhibit his true strengths out of fear for his safety.
Gran is also attempting to protect Nevilles parents in much the same way.
If his parents recovered they could be in danger again. Gran is the most
likely person to have kept them, in her opinion, safe by assuring that they
dont fully recover until the danger passes. This could be through a potion
placed in the gum. It could be that Nevilles mom is starting to recover.
Could she be giving Neville the gum wrappers as a type of clue? Maybe the
clue is that there arent any long lasting bubbles (someone here just
recently pointed out the lack of bubbles, sorry cant remember who). Maybe
whatever Gran is putting in the gum changes its properties so that the
bubbles dont last. This could be a big hint if Neville was thinking right.
(Like why arent there any bubbles? You keep giving me these wrappers every
time I come and Ive yet to see a bubble even though this gum is known for
long lasting bubbles. Is there something defective with this gum?)
Is Gran well? I dont think she is. I think she is losing the battle to keep
all of them safe. Neville seems to be overcoming his inferiority complex, or
some charm that has been placed on him, since his parents assailants have
escaped from Azkaban. Neville has shown himself as being more like his
fathers son. I dont think Gran can control any of them, even for their own
protection, too much longer.
