I enjoy reading the conspiracy theories as well. I do think however,
that JKR won't make someone that is close to Harry ESE. I do think
that there is something going on with Lupin (aside from being a
werewolf) that he is hiding. Is he feeling guilty about something?
Was he forced into doing something terrible as a youth? (What is the
curse that makes you do things against your will?)
I also don't like the way Lupin reacts during the penseive scene. It
seems obvious that he doesn't like what the Potter gang are doing to
Snape, yet he does nothing to stop it (I realize that he was a child
in this scene).
Lupin tells us in POA that his transformations into a werewolf was very
painful, and that he didn't have a lot of friends because of his being a werewolf
and the prejudice against him. That is why he told lies to Sirius, James and
Peter about where he was when he transformed. He also tells us in POA that in
their fifth year, Sirius, James and Peter were able to keep him company as
animagi, OWLS are taken just before the end of the fifth year. Lupin in the
Pensieve scene is finally able to joke about being a werewolf and Sirius and James
laugh with him, how is he going to be able to tell them not to bother Snape in
the next hour? He is afraid of losing their friendship. The Pensieve scene
shows this very well.
