Maybe Dementors are Lethifolds cross-bred with Boggarts.  I've always 
thought Dementors and Boggarts were related.  They're introduced in 
the same book, which could point to a similar nature.  They both have 
the ability to cause almost paralyzing fear, though they use 
different means.  And Boggarts can be defeated by laughter, just as 
Dementors can be defeated (or at least driven back) by happy 
thoughts.  As you said, they have a lot in common with Lethifolds as 
well.  So what do you get when you combine the menace of a Lethifold 
with the abilities of a Boggart?  A Dementor, of course!
