It's one of those occasions where this incident is reported afterwards
(by Hermione) because it occurs during the time that Harry had
fainted and sounds almost as if Lupin used a Patronus judging by
Hermione's description....
"and a silvery thing shot out of his wand at it and it turned around
and sort of glided away...."

Interesting. I'd forgotten the exact sequence until Kneasy reminded
us.
