Carol:
I don't want to get into the cockroach connection or ESE!Lupin,
either. But Hermione was present when Parvati asked: "Why would
Professor Lupin be afraid of a crystal ball?" (boggart chapter of PoA,
quoted from memory), so she's at least aware of another possible
interpretation for Lupin's boggart--not that a crystal ball is the
same as a prophecy orb, but they both relate to the future. Also
there's a scene (in PoA around Christmas time??) in which Trelawney
mentions something about offering to read Lupin's fortune in a crystal
ball and Lupin hurrying away. Sorry I don't have the exact quote and I
may be remembering incorrectly.

I personally think that both scenes are red herrings to steer readers
(and Harry) away from correctly interpreting Lupin's boggart as the
moon. I really don't see why Lupin would lie to Hermione about his
boggart being the moon when he's in the process of confessing that
he's a werewolf. What could be more terrible in Hermione's eyes than
that (unless he's a DE and a prophecy orb or crystal ball would
somehow lead her to figure that out).

Anyway, I don't see a prophecy orb connection, but for what it's
worth, crystal balls are definitely mentioned in connection with Lupin.
