The Sergeant Majorette says
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Lupin is *not* a nice
person. He's mild-mannered and mellow, but he's a bitch (in the New
York City sense of word, okay? It's a *good* thing...) I think the
boggart thing was *way* meaner than the underpants exhibition, and
funnier, too. He's all over Snape at every opportunity, in such a
manner that poor Severus ends up spitting mad and our Remus ends up
with a look of extreme innocence and wounded piety.
I once worked for a somewhat famous man who was well-known for his
several highly unpleasant wives. Turns out that it really entertained
him to watch these women get on people's nerves. He had the
reputation of being a sweet little old man, but he cracked me up with
the things he used to mutter, Kreacherlike, under his breath. (See
also Charo vs Eva Gabor on the Johnny Carson show, or Katie Couric
vs. Bob Dole)
Lupin's like that, which is probably what James and Sirius saw in
him, and maybe also why JKR says he's her favorite character.
