For some reason, I always thought the hippogriff calendar was a 
reference to McNair, Buckbeak's intedned killer in POA. There was a 
line in book 4, or 5 where LV asks McNair if he is ready to kill more 
important things than magical creatures.... That is not verbatum but 
close. Bode's killer was definitely a deatheater, IMHO.
