Neri:
We are talking here about a past Hogwarts headmaster portrait. He is
not confined to the Potters' house. He'd run immediately to tell DD.
actually, the real question is the opposite: why did the portrait
stay to see the whole thing instead of running to get DD immediately
when James shouted "It's Voldemort". It is reasonable to assume the
whole thing happened quite fast, and maybe the past headmaster was at
one of his other portraits and visited the Potters' just in time to
witness the end of the match between Voldy and Lily.
Or maybe it was not a portrait. My point is that there are many
possible ways for DD to know what happened in GH without any
additional (real) person in the place, such as Lupin or DD himself,
to witness everything.
