Mandy here:
I've often played with the idea that 'that boy' could have been
Snape.
It's a long shot, I know, but what if Lilly and Snape became friends
early in their Hogwarts years, when they were 11-12-13 years old?.
Perhaps she alone, offered him friendship and somehow found out about
his abusive home life and brought him to her home for a visit?
Later, as they got older he pulled away from her because of her
muggle parents, and he needed/wanted to impress the other pureblooded
Slytherins. Or perhaps Snape got the crap beaten out of him for his
fraternization with a 'mudblood'?
Just thoughts, I don't have any canon to support this, naturally. ;-)
