I hope the Veil will play a much more deep and complex role in the
story than that, but at the very least, I can see the veil being used
as a way to commuinicate with the dead. 

Philosophically, I have one problem with that though. The dead have
very different priorities than the living. People who have near death
experiences say that on the other side it is incredibly peaceful, and
things you were so desperately worried and concerned about on the
mortal side, become very petty and insignificant to someone on the
immortal side of the veil. So, I see it as very very difficult to
entice the dead to actually come to the veil and communicate with you. 

They simply would not see the same need and urgency that living people
would. 

Just a thought.
