The Sergeant Majorette says

There were only four attacks (Colin, Mrs. Norris, Justin and NHN,
Hermione and Penelope Clearwater) and none occurred while the victim
was in a group. So it's conceivable that Ginny could have been
lurking in the shadows and just pointed out a person she knew to be a
muggleborn and hissed "sic 'em!" Then she slips back into the
shadows. Of course, all the attacks had to take place near a lavatory
(are the showers/baths in the same room as the toilets?) so the
basilisk could get to the rendevous point.

Then again, maybe this is one of those plot points that doesn't bear
close scrutiny. Like the nuns used to tell us in third grade: "Take
it on faith." There's a lot in *The Books* that I, as an adult,
prefer not to think about too much.

huge load of disbelief)
