The Longbottoms were tortured after LV's disapperance, as I
understand it. They were *looking* for him. Bellatrix shouted at
her trial (quoting from memory) "we alone tried to find him."
Someone also tells Harry that the Longbottom's attack upset the WW
because 1. they were so popular and 2. Everyone was starting to feel
safe because of LV's disapperance and supposed death.
If they were under a Fidelius charm, it might have been lifted after
the death of the Potters because there was no need to protect
Neville anymore as the prophecy had been fulfilled because LV had
marked Harry as his equal. DD may have incorrectly assumed that the
Longbottoms and Neville were under no immidiate danger. And, truth
be told, Neville really wasn't from the deatheaters.
I know, they could have attacked him and tortured him as a
baby...but, I'd prefer not to picture that...
