But also remember that Tom Riddle /wasn't/ "real" Tom Riddle - he was 
an echo, a ghost, a projection for want of a better term. He wasn't 
human and probably, the Basilisk could only hear him when he spoke; 
he would presumably have no scent and make no noise.
