I just wanted to say that this bit would have been comprehended by LV 
and Crouch!Moody in advance, and they recognized that Harry would be 
bound into competing. If the contract is within the Goblet, its 
confounded perception rules, and having gone out, it's too late to 
change its 'mind' so to speak. 

Always look for the simple, as-was-written explanation first. ;-
) ...even if you do choose to dismiss it. :)
