Maybe Lily & James didn't really believe what had been predicted, or 
thought it secondary to another reason LV might be after them. I 
think the prophecy, while part of the plot, isn't the main reason LV 
went there that night, which might answer your latter question 
regarding the double bluff.

Of course Voldemort had a reason to be looking for the Potters and 
Longbottoms even without the prophecy. He just doesn't seem to be 
the type to forgive and forget. <g>
