By the way, do we even know whether DD revealed that confession to the
public? Did he mention Barty Crouch Jr to anyone?

Yes, some people believed Harry. But take a look at *who* they are :
DD, who is known to have had a special fondness of Harry for years;
the staff of Hogwarts who works under DD; some Aurors who trust DD;
the Weasleys who have pretty much adopted Harry; Hermione who has been
Harry's friend since their first year at Hogwarts; Sirius and Remus
who were Harry's father's best friends; Luna whose father strongly
mistrusts Fudge for his own reasons; Neville whose Gran was always a
strong supporter of DD. And so on. Only people who liked either Harry
or DD before LV's rebirth. They are hardly representative of the
general public.
