#1 - I thought Hermione was embarrassed about having been in there crying and didn't want the teachers to know she had a moment of weakness. Saying she thought she could take on a troll would at least make her look, at worst, overconfident.
#2 - Everyone in the wizarding world was making fun of Harry, thinking he was crazy for saying Voldemort was back. Most likely, he knew they wouldn't believe him if he told anyone about Umbridge's punishment, either, and she took advantage of the situation. That made me wonder if she knew actually knew Voldemort was back, instead of being just, plain mean. I also wondered if it was supposed to make him realize that it would be in his best interest to have 'back-up' in future confrontations with Voldemort.
Shari - who can imagine Umbridge and Bellatrix hanging out together on a Saturday night.
