questions, because she'd done the reading.
So there's no absolute reason why Harry couldn't have known them.
Snape was certainly setting out to be nasty, but also making the point that
it's not just talent that's important, it's learning too (a good message for
any novice wizard, in my opinion!)

I think that's reaching a little. Hermione is not typical, in that way, by any means. Snape also was not asking basic questions. They sounded like final exam questions to me. I don't think he thought for a moment Harry might know the answers. He just wanted to knock him down a peg, right from the beginning. To show him who's boss. To show everyone else, the Famous Harry Potter doesn't walk on water.
