He was eventually murdered by his own son, but that wasn't part of the
original plan and didn't need to be done before Crouch Jr. could get
to Hogwarts and initiate the part of the plan involving Harry. He did,
however, need to be cursed, as did the real Alastor Moody, which is
where the confusion comes in.
