I think Rowling answered this for us in the beginning of OotP when there was 
the possibility of Harry being expelled and forced to live in the Muggle 
world.  Harry said he could not live in the Muggle world now that he had seen where he truly belonged.

I certainly don't want to see Harry, Ron or Hermione die in the series, but I 
think all three would choose it over being the new Hogwarts squib caretaker.
