US Edition Order of the Phoenix, Ch. 23 - Christmas on the Closed
Ward - p. 501:
"Harry sorted though his presents and found one with Hermione's
handwriting on it. She had given him too a book that resembled a
diary, except that it said things like 'Do it today or later you'll
pay!' every time he opened a page."
See I thought that when JKR wrote "except" she meant that his diary
was different from Ron's because it said things. :D
Taryn:
I believe it's different from a DIARY in that it said this. As in, it looked like a diary, but it wasn't, because it said things when he opened a page. If it was different from RON'S because it talked, it probably would have said, "She had given him too a book that resembled a diary, except that HIS said things like..."
At any rate, despite the fact that I think they're identical, I think the better gift would've been a silent one. ;)
