But nowhere in the books is Lupin called an animagus. He's not. He's a
werewolf, a completely different story altogether. It's the other three
Marauders who became animagi in order to be able to be with Lupin even when
he's in wolf form, they learned in secret from him. Lupin never learned to
be an animagus and he isn't one.
