Wasn't that because they met when she went for the job?  And I think 
he was just being kind in not kicking her out when Umbridge had 
already upset her.

I definitely think the 14 years is not a coincidence.  It's too neat 
that he started teaching then, presumably at the start of the school 
year therefore only a few weeks after Harry's parents were killed.  
It may just be that he had nowhere else to go so DD took him in.
