Now me (Annette) again:
I think you're misunderstanding me, Jem.  At the very beginning of the 
story, when Harry is still a baby and Voldemort tries to kill him, the book 
says it's the most exciting thing that's happened in eleven years.  That 
would imply that something happened 11 years *before*, i.e., about 10 years 
before Harry was *born*.
