I think that cannon supports the theory that the Des and Sirius knew
Pettigrew was alive and that he'd been a traitor for some time. I reread
portions of PoA and I found some clues. In The Three Broomsticks we have the
following after Fudge & McGonagall explain the Fidelius Charm and DD's reservations:
- "He was sure that somebody close to the Potters had been keeping
You-Know-Who informed of their movements," said Professor McGonnagall darkly.
"Indeed, he had suspected for some time that someone on our side had turned
traitor and was passing a lot of information to You-Know-Who." -
Then, in the Shrieking Shack:
- "You haven't been hiding from ME for twelve years," said Black.
"You've been hiding from Voldemort's old supporters. I heard things in Askaban,
Peter…. They all think you're dead, or you'd have to answer to them…. I've
heard them screaming all sorts of things in their sleep. Sounds like they think
the double-crosser double-crossed them. -
Later, after transforming Scabbers back to Peter:
- "So you see, I had to do something, I was the only one who knew
Peter was still alive ...."
And as an aside, I think we have, in PoA, another instance,
unrecognized of Harry seeing into Voldemort's mind. After he returns from Hogsmeade
after overhearing Fudge & company.
- He could hear [though he had no idea what Black's voice might sound
like] a low, excited mutter. "It has happened, My Lord…the Potters have made me
their Secret-keeper…." And then another voice, laughing shrilly, the same
laugh that Harry heard inside his head whenever the dementors drew near…. -
Is Harry reliving Voldemort's memory of Pettigrew's betrayal?
The Other Cheryl...
