Maybe Snape is guilty of the above. Or maybe Snape tried to save the 
Longbottom family. Perhaps there is a reason why that information 
can't be made public. And perhaps Neville can't be allowed to 
remember that day and so his memory was tampered with. For the good, 
of course. ^-^
