Max:

When I read this question, I immediately thought of the scene between
'Subway Man' and Patrick Swayze in the movie 'Ghost'. If you try to
move an object with your mind, you'll fail. To succeed, you need to
concentrate your emotions.

This fits right in with Steve's theory that the more tormented a soul
is, the more physical manifestations it will cause. It's hard to think
of a more tormented soul in the HP universe than Moaning Myrtle. What
with her perpetual state of mournfulness, it's a wonder she doesn't
cause even more of a racket!
