Hi Laurasia,
Your post made me realise that I had to clarify a few points about
my theory. I think perhaps I should have spent more time writing it
instead of being in such a hurry to post it, because its obvious
that I didn't explain it clearly enough.
The pattern I'm talking about does not rest on the repetition of
imagery or objects or people but a similar sequence of occurences.
I completely acknowledge that other patterns would fit on top of
this one and other thematic structures would be at work. It is by
no means absolute, but I think it does exist underneath all of those.
If I thought my pattern was absolute then, other than the main
characters, other characters could only turn up in certain books.
For the sake of the progression of plot this would, of course, be
impossible. I am not making the suggestion that any two similar
things in the books constitute a mirroring event.
To clarify my point - the important thing about Harry's connection
with Voldemort in CoS and OoTP, is not that is is used (as the scar
is used in PS; as the Scar and Dreams are used in GoF) but that it
is used in a similar fashion and leads to a similar event - i.e.
Harry being lured into a trap to 'save' someone he cares about.
Charlie's involvement in both PS and GoF is not important in and of
itself, but Charlie's involvement with Dragons is. Moreover,
Charlie's involvement with Dragons in GoF is an exaggerated mirror
of Charlie's involvement in PS (where he sends friends to take care
of the Dragon for him).
The second part of this theory is that these events are not merely
mirrored but more importantly exaggerated. So in CoS this person is
Ginny and in OoTP its Sirius (someone infinitely more important to
Harry).
Myrtle appearing in Cos and in GoF would not count within this
pattern. In CoS she is the key that enables the kids to unravel the
whole plot. In OoTP she simply helps Harry along (and a useful tool
to help Harry in the Second task). This is not an exaggerated
mirror of the same event.
Another example is Buckbeak - his appearance in both GoF and OoTP is
inconsequential. It is certainly not an exaggerated mirror of his
appearance in PoA. So these are not included in this pattern. Does
that make more sense?
Again, I'm open to disagreements, but I thought I'd clarify this
because it seemed to be causing some confusion.
Sienna
