Potioncat here:
Kathy, as a fellow Kathy and a fellow grasper of straws I applaud
your theory. But I do disagree. If Tonks/Sirius changed back into
Tonks, she'd go to Azkaban for aiding a known criminal. Sirius
hasn't been cleared by the official government.

I also have to agree. Between it being against Sirius's nature to let other folks take the fall for him, his very much 'hands on' nature, and the fallout for Tonks should she get cuaght as Sirius, no matter who caught her at it, the 'switch' would be impractical at best, down-right (and tragically) wasteful at worst.

There's also another problem that *I* uave personally with it. Animagi are rare, no matter how they're 'made'. You either have it, or you have to train REALLY hard to get the ability.

Metamorphmagi are even rarer...AND, if I remember, according to Tonks herself, you are either born with it, or not. You can't even 'learn' it like Animagi skills.

To have someone one with BOTH skills seems like overkill. In order for this to work, Sirius would, essentially, have to be the ultimate shapeshifter. Almost godlike, in fact, at least when it comes to adjusting his form. I suspect there's a very good reason why Rolwing seperated the two skills, and I have a feeling that its for the very reason that she felt that would make a wizard with both abilities just too damned powerful.

Then there's the other niggling problem--if Sirius was a metamorpmagus to begin with, why didn;t he just shapeshift himself to get out of Azkaban or even afterwards to stay free? Wouldn't that have been more practical than running around as a dog?

For that matter, if he could shapeshift that way, why didn't he shift as soon as he relaized Peter was setting him up? (oaky, I know he didn;t run after Peter's little act in the street, but still, surely he had SOME chance after that point to at least give it a try...).

It just seems rather odd for Sirius to sit on that skill for so long when it could have kept him out of trouble a long time ago, especially if you remember that Lupin admitted that he and James had no problem at all with using what they knew in school to pick on other students...

Just a few centaurs worth
