Ah, Geoff. You're obviously not an afficianado of those old 'B' films
that dominated the Saturday morning matinee way back when - or
did  you never indulge in the 'tanner rush' to see the old Flash 
Gordon and Hopalong Cassidy serials?

'Horse feathers' was quite frequently used as a way  of expressing
disbelief  or incredulity -  equivalent to our 'pull the other one'.
