Potioncat:

Sirius and the trio are discussing DE's and particularly Snape
in GoF, Padfoot Returns (US paperback) 531--532.) One of Sirius'
quotes is "...but I just can't see him (DD) letting Snape teach at
Hogwarts if he'd ever worked for Voldemort..."

So even though Black heard DE's in Askaban talking about Pettigrew,
he never heard about Snape. And it doesn't sound like he knew Snape
ever helped in the first war, because he was surprised that Snape was
at Hogwarts in PoA. (Which supports Snape starting at Hogwarts after
October.)

I suspect DD is the only one who knew of Snape's role in the first
war.

Also, Black doesnt' seem to know about the DE's dark mark, which
makes me think it is usually invisible.
