Hi, Sue. I'd really like to know how much Lucius Malfoy knew about
that diary before he put it in Ginny's cauldron and, like you, how
much Snape knew or guessed. He certainly had Draco cast the
Serpensortia spell on purpose, as if he somehow figured that Harry
might be a Parselmouth, yet he seems surprised that he really is. I
don't think Snape is Malfoy's lap dog *now* (it doesn't make sense
considering the meaning of the phrase), but he definitely was still in
Malfoy's good graces at that point (doing a good job of fooling him,
IMO). His smirking reaction to Draco's flattery is, I think, part of
the pose. And of course, Draco is also playing up to *him*, trying to
retain his status as apparent favorite.

I really, really hope Snape wasn't part of that Muggle-baiting
incident. I think he knows how it feels to be upside down with your
underwear on display and wouldn't want to put anyone else in that
position (literally or figuratively). Like DD, he doesn't seem to have
been present at the QWC, but there's no canon to indicate that he was
absent, either.

Suggested cure for getting "Tiptoe through the Tulips" out of your
head--watch the teaser trailer for PoA. You'll be humming "Something
Wicked This Way Comes"!
