Well there's just no hope for most of us girls out there on this logic is
there? I'm not supermodel material so unless the best friend of a guy I
likes appears interested thus causing the guy to feel jealous I'm just never
going to get a date!

I would presume all the same qualities that lead him to be best friends with
Hermione - including her brains, talent and courage - also lead him to be
attracted to her. Now I realise that it is possible for a guy to be friends
with a girl without being romantically attracted to her but unless he's
looking for some kind of one night stand he's going to be looking for a lot
of the same qualities in a girlfriend as he does in a friend. Not that I
suspect any of this is being consciously considered, and not just because
he's a teenager, but because there aren't many people who could accurately
describe *why* they 'like' one particular person and not another.

You're kidding right?  If you ask me Hermione is a pretty impressive
witch!  Think of all that she has accomplished in 5 years.  She saved
Harry and Ron many times alone with her keen intelligence.  She is
100 times better than Malfoy will ever be, and she has muggle
parents!  (Why do you think Malfoy hates her so much?!)

Well I think you're being a little harsh on the Malfoy brat there (please no
one take this as much of a defence of him, I can't stand him - although he's
a little 2d to actually hate). Malfoy comes second academically to Hermione
and *only* to Hermione from what we know. If that makes her 100 times better
than him then the rest of their year better start looking for janitorial
positions because they're all doomed! I will agree that as a person she's
100 times better than Malfoy - but not as a witch.
