The Sergeant Majorette says
Ron does not have a "crush" on Hermione, and I believe that's the
whole point. A "crush" is the kind of purely hormonal reaction an
adolescent male has to a girl like Fleur or any conventionally
pretty female. We're meant to see Ron's friendship with Hermione
evolve into something more grown-up, and we, along with Harry,
Hermione and everybody else in the world, see it long before Ron
himself does.
Remember the non-hug at the end of the CoS movie? That was
deliberate foreshadowing of the unresolved sexual tension between
Ron/Hermione that JKR knew we'd be seeing in the future.
Really, neither Ron nor Hermione are "crushable". But each is the
kind of person the other kind of person grows up to marry.
Jaimee asks:
What do you mean by "Luna is to Hermione as Viktor is to Ron: a
wake-up call"?
I understand how Viktor can be a wake-up call to Ron because Viktor
made Ron feel jealous and become aware of feeling for Hermione (and
I do mean *aware*! I do not mean that he understands what he's
feeling) But I would love it if you (or anyone on the site) would
ellaborate more on drawing such a parallel between Viktor/Ron and
Luna/Harry...
Dharma replies:
I think that Majorette is trying to say, that Viktor and Luna serve
the same purpose in Hermione and Ron's relationship. Viktor and
Luna are the first characters to openly express attraction to
Hermione and Ron. Therefore, just as Ron is learning through his
feelings of jealousy that Hermione is growing up to become a
desirable young woman, Hermione may also learn that Ron is becoming
a desirable young man by being forced to cope with Luna's less than
subtle behavior where Ron is concerned. The wake up call would be
the knowledge that other people are interested in each of them.
If I'm wrong Majorette, please do not hesitate to let me know. But,
that is what I got out of your post
