Geoff:
I think this is something which we agree on; we develop our own 
mental picture of a character and find it doesn't chime with the film.

Although, in my case, I started the other way. I saw the HP films 
first so have adopted the film characters as my view. But, in the 
case of Tolkien, I approached the films with trepidation as I have 
such a strong view of Middle Earth in my mind. I was, in general, 
pleasantly relieved. There are exceptions though; Hugo Weaving, for 
example, is not Elrond. Other stories have been the same.
