In all fairness to Snape (and as a fence sitter, I must try to be
fair), he could have been trying to get away and get help but he
was too late. Perhaps the reason the Longbottoms are alive at all is
because he got the "right" people there in time to catch the
torturers and save their lives but sadly,not their sanity.

I could buy this, along with the idea that he could have been at the
Potters in October, still acting as a DE.
My one thought is what Bellatrix would think about the fact that he
wasn't caught when the other 3 were.
