Here's another, equally simple explanation.

Snape did indeed try to thwart Voldemort at Godric's Hollow (the LOLLIPOP in
my hand will explain why)

He fails. "Lily's dead. Potter's brat is alive."

"How dare Potter's brat be alive when Lily's dead."

Snape spends the next 10 years chewing on that. When Harry eventually hoves
into view, he becomes the target for 10 years' worth of vented spleen
