I've thought for a while that Snape is with the Order because he's paying
his life-debt to James (and maybe to DD for giving him a second chance?).
He's protecting Harry, and he finds it a loathsome job.  He didn't like
James, and now he has to protect his son.  Ugh.  Frankly, I bet Snape ends
up dying to protect Harry.
