Interesting and thought-provoking as this theory is, the canon refutation is pretty 
straight-forward: in OotP (sorry, don't have my copy available), the old witch who is 
overseeing the OWL tests tells Umbridge that she, herself, administered DD's OWL's and 
that he "did things with a wand I've never seen before." Hard to imagine why she'd say that 
if it were Ron (or any of the other redheads)--they wouldn't need to take the OWLs again.
