Tip nodded, not sagely:
It is so easy to attribute even more cruelty to Snape than he has
rightly earned. If Snape comes from an old money pureblood family,
then I should imagine he was raised to despise the Weasley clan or at
least feel contempt for them.

Someone also wrote about Snape wanting to be headmaster and I see some
cannon evidence for that in CoS when Draco tells him to apply for the
job. There is no evidence that one has to be nice in a DD way to hold
that position so I'm not sure why Snape would or wouldn't want it.
But it reminds me of an interesting line I read in a fan fiction
somewhere about Snape wanting the dark arts job. I think most of us
assume the basic truth of his DADA ambitions because we were told by
(Percy, I believe) in PS that Snape has them. But we've never heard
from Snape or anyone else in cannon any sort of confirmation on that
topic.

I suppose the point of my long (apologies!) ramble above is, we have
to be careful about assigning characteristics to Snape or attributing
desires to him, particularly negative ones, because his place in
cannon puts him in a position to accept those points, but cannon has
not actually ascribed any of them to him.
