because we were told by

We do have canon evidence that Snape wants the DADA job. It is in 
OOTP, where Umbridge inspects Snapes class. Umbridge asks Snape if 
it is true that he has applied for the DADA job every year since 
Quirrel, and that Snape applied for the DADA job the first year he 
was at Hogwarts. Snape replies that it is indeed true. Snape does 
want the DADA job
