What happened to Harry after the attack that killed his parents?

In my mind, there is some confusion as to when Hagrid took Harry from
his demolished home, after the attack by Voldemort on Harry's
parents. In Prisoner Of Azkaban, Hagrid says that he went to James
and Lily's home after the attack and rescued Harry; however, it
wasn't until the next night that he took Harry to Dumbledore at his
aunt's house.
Also, and I'm sure we will find out soon, why was it so important for
Voldemort to kill Harry's parents? I have a really far-fetched
theory, but perhaps Lily was Voldemort's granddaughter? (We don't
know this, but there is always the reference to her green eyes, which
would suggest that she has a part of Slytherin in her somewhere.) It
would also explain why her sister hated her and her child...although
I have a feeling that Petunia isn't as self-righteous as she would
like everyone to think she is....I think she also has a past!
Sure wish JRR would release the next book! Between waiting for the
next movie and trying to unravel all the clues, it would be good to
have some fresh material!
