Subject: Luna's importance to the series.
The Sorting Hat has spoken of the need for inter-house
unity. Now,
traditionally, we know that Gryffindor is aligned with
Hufflepuff;
conversely, this means Ravenclaw is tradionally
aligned with
Slytherin.
<snip>
Luna breaks this. Although we have hints of
inter-house mingling
(Ginny and Harry both see Ravenclaws,) Luna openly
supports
Gryffindor. And she, like Harry (and Hermione, who
could have ended up
a Ravenclaw,) is unique to their house. Harry, because
he could have
fit into all of the houses. Luna is unique to her
house because it is
built on logic and intelligence, and yet she believes
in the
unbelievable. She calmly ignores the nasty behaviour
people from her
house shows her, and participates in the Battle of the
Department of
Mysteries. She also helps Harry through his pain of
losing Sirius -
for the first time, a character from another house
shows true
alignment with Harry, and a Gryffindor.
Luna, moreso than the DA, is the first step to
inter-house unity.

now.
Mo:
I totally agree!
Luna is a very interesting and prominant character
right off the bat. I just wonder why she didn't
appear earlier in the series.
I think she IS rather intelligent. Just because she
believes the stuff in the magazine, doesn't make her
UNintelligent. I think she just doesn't care what
other people say because she is confident enough in
herself as a person. Ginny likes her and is in
somewhat of an awe of her. She finds Luna funny and
amusing, but at the same time, Ginny has the common
sense to know that she is "okay," as she says so on
the train.
Luna also calls it as it is. She doesn't try to beat
around the bush, which I like.
She also SEEMS unaffected by things, but is she?
Sometimes people put up a front in order to protect
themselves. I wonder if all of her quirks are really
a front? She has had some tragedy in her life: Her
mother dying, not really having any close friends,
being ridiculed by a lot of students, but she chooses
not to show herself being negatively affected by any
of it. In some ways, I see her life slightly
paralleling Harry's.
I also am curious what is the story behind her name,
since JKR always does name-appropriate characters.
Luna - relating to the moon, and Love-Good. Does this
mean she is an openly Loving and Good character? The
Luna part I am still thinking about.
~Mo, who is set in thinking that Luna, Lupin, Snape,
DD, HRH, and the rest of the gang are all really good
people! No ESE's here!
