remember him picking on Harry, Hermione, and Neville.)

The only times I can remember are when Ron has done
something to provoke it. He's made to swap roots with Malfoy
after deliberately mutilating Malfoy's roots in PoA, and he serves
a detention with Harry in GoF after they start yelling at Snape
because of the tooth incident. Mostly it seems that Snape, like
Umbridge, will leave you alone if you "keep your head down and
your temper under control."
It's Harry's misfortune to stand out through no fault of his own.
But the wizarding world sets great store in collective
responsibility...which means that people can expect to suffer or
benefit for things that they themselves didn't do.
Come to think of it, there are many places in the real
world, including some within driving distance of my house,
where, if you can't get your hands on the !@#$ who dissed you,
it's your honest duty to whack a relative instead. Snape probably
thinks he's showing admirable restraint.
