Bookworm:
(CoS p194 US): "... a long black snake shot out of it [Harry's
wand], fell heavily onto the floor between them, and raised itself,
ready to strike. There were screams as the crowd backed swiftly
away, clearing the floor." <argument between Snape and Lockhart over
who would get rid of it> then, "...there was a loud bang; the snake,
instead of vanishing, flew ten feet into the air and fell back to
the floor with a loud smack. Enraged, hissing furiously, it
slithered straight toward Justin Finch-Fletchley and raised itself
again, fangs exposed, poised to strike." After Harry told the snake
to calm down: "Snape, too was looking at Harry in an unexpected way:
It was a shrewd and calculating look, and Harry didn't like it. He
was also dimly aware of an ominous muttering all around the walls."
So there was a reaction from the other students to the appearance of
the snake, but that fear was overshadowed by the revelation of Harry
speaking Parceltongue. And Draco wouldn't get in trouble because he
could claim honestly that his Head of House had told him what to do.
