That sounds like it's SUPPOSED to be construed as a "no" but in
fact, it's not. (It's not a yes, either.) In fact that non-answer,
IMO, is just a way to address the question in a vague way.

It IS, of course, possible that Snape might be an (unregistered)
Animagus whose form is that of a bat.

You may be right. In fact, it's possible that the James Potter gang
learned how to become animagi indirectly because of Snape. If Snape
was in Gryffindor, as some people suspect, I could see Sirius rifling
through his journals, books, or any other "light reading" Snape might
have lying about.

What if Snape found out that James Potter and gang were unregistered
animagi? So, he decides to go to the head master after OWL exams, but
before he can do that Potter's crew humiliate him in front of the
school (by hanging upside down like a bat). James in effect tells
Snape without revealing to the rest of the school that he also knows
that Snape is an unregistered animagus (a bat).
